I still want to know where the hell Voldemort found all those people to fight for him.
In the books I was always under the impression that the Death Eaters were a small group comprised of Voldie’s most trusted wizards, inasmuch as Voldemort trusted anyone. Let’s say, oh, thirty wizards or less total. And it’s likely that those core Death Eaters in turn recruited some wizards who were fervent about the cause and were willing to die for it, but didn’t meet the requirements of becoming a Death Eater proper. Let’s be generous and say that nets them another forty people.
Okay, so now we have about seventy Death Eaters and violent zealots. To me that sounds like a reasonable number given the size of the British wizarding world, the exclusivity and paranoia of the Death Eaters, and the fact that while many wizards probably sympathized with Voldemort’s cause, and they certainly didn’t mind ratting out their mudblood neighbors, they sure as hell weren’t strapping on their wands and going to war against them. Because goodness, that’s dangerous, and they’ve got families to think about, don’t you know?
I don’t know. Maybe I’m just underestimating the fervor of the wizards that supported blood purity, but I really didn’t get the impression that there were HUNDREDS of them willing to step up and fight at Voldie’s side during the final battle.
My impression reading the books was that he had maybe 100, tops. He had a very trusted 10 or so that he knew in school. Then a mostly-trusted another… twenty-ish who had proved themselves to be exceptional (like Snape). I figured the other 70 were Team Rocket type recruits, armed with the wizarding world equivalent of Rattatas and Ekans.
